They only have plenty for the rich 1957

Description:

They only have plenty for the rich,
but we aim for plenty for all (the people).

Translation of the text in the left top corner of the poster:
Around 20 million
Americans do not have
funds to
buy more than one
liter of milk per month and
to consume more than 6 kilo-
grams meat per year.

The author of this poster is Viktor Govorkov, who created it in 1957. The poster shows a struggling American mother counting her last coins while her hungry-looking child stares at the milk bottles on the counter, unable to afford them. Behind them stands a fat capitalist in a top hat with a cigar, symbolizing wealth held only by the rich. In the background, tall city buildings emphasize the contrast between poverty and abundance. The countertop display highlights how millions of Americans cannot afford even basic food. The slogan “They only have plenty for the rich, and we strive for plenty for all” («У них лишь для богатых изобилие, а мы стремимся к изобилию для всех») reinforces the message of inequality. The composition reflects classic Soviet Cold War propaganda contrasting American hardship with the Soviet claim of fairness for all.
