This 1936 poster by B. Efimov and M. Ioffe promotes the idea that life in the Soviet Union has become happier and more prosperous. Three smiling citizens read Pravda, which features a quote from Stalin praising the achievements of the revolution. The slogan at the top, “Жить стало лучше, жить стало веселее,” translates to “Life has become better, life has become more joyful.” Below them stands a caricatured enemy figure, who complains, “Мне грустно потому что весело тебе,” meaning “I am sad because you are happy.” The contrast between the cheerful Soviet citizens and the bitter opponent reinforces the message of national progress.
