The second worker, standing gloomily with a cigarette, symbolizes idleness and low effort, his income smaller and the line behind him declining. The slogan “Как работал – так и заработал” (“You earn as you work”) promotes the idea that wages should directly correspond to one’s labor and performance. This piece encouraged work discipline and personal responsibility within the Soviet labor system.
