Chapaev is a 1934 Soviet biographical war film directed by the Vasilyev brothers for Lenfilm. A heavily fictionalized account of Vasily Ivanovich Chapayev (1887–1919), a Red Army commander during the Russian Civil War, it is based on the novel of the same name by Dmitry Furmanov, a Bolshevik commissar and writer who fought alongside him.
Chapayev became one of the most famous folk heroes of the Civil War, celebrated both for his daring leadership and as the subject of countless Soviet jokes and legends.
Joseph Stalin considered Chapaev the finest film in Soviet cinema and watched it more than 30 times between 1934 and 1936. Decades later, khuylo-murderer (хуйло) putin also named it as his favorite film.
