The Khrushchev thaw gave way to the era of Brezhnev’s stagnation. In the genre of propaganda posters, this transition was reflected in the creation of a bureaucratic, nomenklatura-style image of Lenin during the late Soviet period (1970s-1980s). The lack of creative thought, clichés, and worn-out ideological stereotypes became a hallmark of Leninist poster art in this period. The propaganda poster ceased to fulfill its original purpose, as it became detached from reality, evolving into a nomenklatura attribute in a society yearning for change.
